Pressure washing or soft washing?
The two methods do the same job with different force. Pressure washing uses a high-pressure stream of water to lift dirt from hard surfaces such as concrete. Soft washing uses low pressure, usually with a cleaning solution, for surfaces that high pressure could damage: brownstone and other soft stone, older brick, painted surfaces and wood.
A brownstone stoop and a concrete sidewalk shouldn't be cleaned the same way. When we assess the job, we look at each surface and choose the method for it.
City rules that shape the schedule
Power washing in New York runs on the City's calendar:
- Sidewalks. Under Department of Environmental Protection rules, sidewalks may not be flushed between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and not with a hose or piping from November 1 through the end of March (15 RCNY § 20-08). The City can also suspend sidewalk flushing, for example during a drought. The sidewalk cleaning page explains what that means in practice.
- Landmarks. On an individual landmark or in a historic district, the Landmarks Preservation Commission lists cleaning sidewalks, storefronts and facade elements with low-pressure water washing among the maintenance work that doesn't need an LPC permit (LPC permit types). Most other work affecting the exterior needs one, so tell us if your building is designated.
In practice, most exterior washing in New York happens between April and October.
Insurance and building paperwork
Exterior work happens in public view and often on shared property, so buildings usually want the paperwork first. Purple Window Cleaning is fully licensed and insured, and a Certificate of Insurance is issued to building management before work begins. If the building also asks for additional insured status, workers' compensation or higher limits, select it in the estimate form and the team confirms it.

Frequently asked questions
Is power washing safe for brownstone?
Brownstone and other soft stone call for a gentle approach, which usually means low-pressure soft washing rather than high pressure. We choose the method for each surface when we assess the job.
When can you wash our sidewalk?
Outside 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and between April and October: City rules don't allow flushing sidewalks with a hose from November 1 through the end of March.
Can you combine power washing with window cleaning?
Yes. Mention both in the estimate request, or set up a recurring exterior maintenance program that covers windows and surfaces together.
Do you need an LPC permit to wash a landmark building?
